Doula from the Heart
I am the proud mother of three beautiful, grown children. I also have three energetic grandchildren. I worked for an obstetrician in Ohio as a medical assistant. This was the best job of my life! Unfortunately, the doctor retired and I went to work as an office assistant at a processing plant. I found no satisfaction in this type of work, because I longed to help people and care for them when they were in need.
I moved to San Francisco bay area in 1972, got married and had three children of my own. One was with an epidural and two were natural births. During this time, again I was working in a business where I took care of people and nurtured them. I worked in the restaurant business! This was a great challenge as everyone’s likes and tastes are different. But, I continued working in the restaurant business until the offer came through from the Oakland Fire Department in 1991.
This was a dream come true. I was back working in the medical field (as a medical 911 dispatcher) and was helping to care for people during the most extreme times of their lives. Saving property and lives everyday. What a great job to have!
After 19 years with the fire department, I still felt a void in my life. I needed something more to make me happy. I found what would make me happy when I was with my daughter –in-law during her whole labor and delivery. I watched everything very closely. I thought to myself “this is what I really want to do!” I spent several months looking up everything I could find about doulas/birth professionals. I found that there is a great need for mothers to have support during the birthing process. I felt that I had finally found my true calling!
IT’S MY BELIEF THAT EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE A DOULA BEFORE AND AFTER BIRTH!
